To love a Baobab

I started my day in the relative cool of sunrise, then it got hot so fast that I had ice cream for breakfast. Before driving into a world of dust, heat and drought, where I spent the morning photographing live stock, dead of thirst and hunger, on the road side.

Later, when the earth slowly tilted away from the sun, and Baobabs’ caught the last rays of light in their massive branches. I picked my way carefully around thorn tangles to the biggest tree of all… a cliff of tree, under which were strung two hammocks.

And as a storm growled in the distance and the hot wind shook my hammock, I fell in love, with a tree…

Come, drive with me through South Africa, Namibia and Botswana

Popa Falls to Maun

A day of dead horses. Felled by the drought they now provide sustenance for vultures and white butterflies.

Halali to Popa Falls

A day of contrasts. The bright clear lines of the Etosha pan to the wild tumble of water at Popa Falls.

From the stark silence of the Namib to the dry abundance of Etosha.

St Nowhere to Outjo

I find an oil rig. Deserted, it is now the temporary roots of gulls. Soon the desert will consume it.

Walvis Bay to St Nowhere

Step gently on the earth, it’s fragile out there, deep in the desert, sometimes leaving foot prints is too much.

The Dunes around Walvis Bay

It was a ‘Landie’ kind of day.

Windhoek to Walvis Bay

On day four I am eyeball to eyeball with a canned cheetah. I know when I look at him (contained for my pleasure) that I really don’t have the right to see it ‘all’.

Fish River Canyon to Windhoek

On day three I tie my tent to a tree. With only a box of matches and twigs build myself a roaring fire.  I was so proud!

Cape Town to the Fish River Canyon

I am a road tripper, I drive alone, my destinations are seldom defined, and often not physical. My aim is to break through the subtle comfort zones with which we cocoon ourselves from life. And, in breaking down these barriers, to challenge that most insidious knowledge; the things we take for granted.

In our rush to consume, we are losing our innate wisdom, our empathy, our connection to ourselves, to others and to the universe. It is not the unspoiled, wild places on planet Earth I wish to find, but the unspoiled places in me, and they are most easily found in silence and solitude.
